Home

The Department is responsible for the implementation of the Extension of Security of Tenure Act of 1997. It protects people that live on farm land and peri-rural land with the consent of the owner or person in charge. Excluded from the protection of the Act are people that use the land for industrial, commercial or mining purposes; and those that earn more than a prescribed amount. The current prescribed amount is R5, 000.

The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform intends, in terms of Section 1 read together with section 28 of the Extension of Security of Tenure Act 1997, to make the regulations increasing the prescribed amount to R13, 625..
