Notice to the aerial survey industry

The Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information (NGI), a component within the Branch: National Geomatics Management Services (NGMS) is, among other services, responsible for acquiring aerial imagery for South Africa. In 2008 NGI started acquiring digital aerial imagery at ground sample distance (GSD) of 50cm. This product has proved to be very popular among the users for different uses. However there are some users that are being excluded because of the limited GSD. Based on user consultations and their needs, an investigation on changing the GSD to 25cm has been completed. As such, NGI has decided to change the GSD from 50cm to 25cm with effect from the 2017/2018 programme of acquisition of aerial imagery.  It is believed that the new generation sensor systems are well equipped to economically acquire imagery at 25cm GSD.

The purpose of this communique is to timeously inform the aerial survey industry about the change in GSD of the aerial imagery as from the 2017/18 programme.

It must also be noted that aerial imagery is a national asset and therefore it is required that NGI is able to process archived imagery in the future. All imagery to be acquired from these sensor systems must permit imagery to be retrieved from archive when required in the future.
